The Elite Three also known as M-Q-W is a term used in Canada to refer to three of the member universities of the Old Four athletic conference, McGill-Queen's-Western. The name is coined after the Big Three grouping of American universities Harvard-Yale-Princeton, the comparison between the six is superficial. The three Canadian universities were all founded during the 19th century opposed to the colonial era American three, and while MQW universities hold substantial prestige in Canada and are considered first tier universities internationally, their prestige is for the most part regional. This is perhaps aside from McGill, which is noted occasionally as a peer to Ivy League institutions. Queen's, a university modeled after the University of Edinburgh, draws a large student base from the United States and abroad as well. The storied rivalry between McGill and Queen's, while fledgling in comparison, has similarities to that of the Harvard-Yale and Oxford-Cambridge rivalries.
